Parkland men's hoops can't overcome late run

DANVILLE — All Jake Beesley could do was watch.

Before fouling out, the Champaign Central graduate helped keep the Parkland men's basketball team in Thursday's NJCAA Division II national tournament quarterfinal against Richard Bland (Va.).

Beesley led the Cobras with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. He helped keep a tall Statesmen frontcourt in check.

Parkland advances to Elite Eight

DANVILLE — The outcome is what Anthony Figueroa and his Parkland men’s basketball team wanted on Tuesday night.

“You’re always happy when you win,” the Cobras coach said.

A 62-54 victory against Johnson County (Kan.) in the first round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament kept the Cobras’ national championship aspirations intact.

Parkland's Howard doesn't let slight size deter him on court

DANVILLE — Cornelius McIntosh first met Terrion Howard during his orientation at Parkland College.

McIntosh, a 6-foot-4 guard from Chicago, wasn't quite sure why Howard, who stands a foot shorter than McIntosh, was there.

"I didn't know he played basketball," McIntosh said.

Dual Parkland hoops national title bids 'a dream come true'

CHAMPAIGN — Before both Parkland basketball teams gathered inside Dodds Athletic Center on Friday afternoon, they were together.

No real surprise there.

“We were just watching March Madness with them downstairs and joking around,” Parkland women’s guard Kerstyn Lowery said. “We’re pretty close with (the men’s team).”

Despite loss, Sages wrap up best season in school history

PEORIA — With the Monticello football team advancing to the Class 3A state semifinals in the fall, Monticello starters Johnny Dawson and Isiah Florey got a late start practicing with their basketball teammates for this season.
