SAN ANTONIO — Freshman Michael Feagles carded an 11-under 133 over two rounds Monday to lead Illinois men’s golf at the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational.

Feagles was just 1 stroke behind individual leader Max McGreevy of Oklahoma following the tournament’s first day.

Martinez pinned, falls in NCAA title match

ST. LOUIS — Isaiah Martinez wrestled the 100th match of his career Saturday night at Scottrade Center, donning his orange singlet reserved solely for national championships against Penn State’s Vincenzo Joseph in the 165-pound title match.

UI Roundup: Wells breaks Illini record; pair named All-Americans

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — David Kendziera placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles and Jonathan Wells broke his own Illinois school record in the heptathlon, as both Illini earned first-team All-America honors at the NCAA indoor track and field championships on Saturday.

Kendizera posted a time of 7.73 seconds in the hurdles finals, while Wells tallied 5,786 points.

UI roundup: Softball closes event with victory

BATON ROUGE, La. — Stephanie Abello cracked a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the sixth inning Sunday for Illinois softball, lifting her team to a 5-3 win over Troy to conclude the LSU Invitational.

The Illini improved to 12-6 on the season with a 4-1 showing at the event.

UI roundup: Martinez to compete for Big Ten title

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Illinois wrestling team began the first day of the 2017 Big Ten Championships with some ups and downs.

The Illini finished the day in sixth place with 71 points. First-place Ohio State leads the competition with 117 points.

The Illini will send seven of their 10 wrestlers into Sunday’s action. 

Illini legends, lists and lore: March 5 in Illini history

In his final home appearance, 44 years ago Sunday — March 5, 1973 — star forward Nick Weatherspoon became Illinois basketball’s then-all-time scoring leader. After the Illini’s 77-76 win versus Northwestern, previous UI scoring champ Dave Scholz presented the record-setting ball to “The Spoon.” Weatherspoon played one final game five days later, scoring 17 additional points against Iowa.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Illinois baseball team went up 15-9 going into the bottom of the eighth and hung on for a 15-14 win Friday night against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Pat McInerney (2 for 4) had five RBI to lead the Illini (2-3).

Illinois will induct 28 into Hall of Fame

CHAMPAIGN — The inaugural Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame class is loaded with familiar names, 28 of the greatest in Illini history from players to coaches. The 2017 class was announced Thursday morning, rounding out the group that was started last year with All-American linebacker Dick Butkus.

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Illinois baseball team wasted no time making its mark on the 2017 season.

The Illini exploded for five runs in the first inning — nine in the first three frames — to cruise past Lamar 10-2 on Friday.
