UI roundup: Quiana wins gymnastics award

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois men’s gymnast Sebastian Quiana on Monday was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Quiana, a two-time winner of the first-year athlete award, took first place in the pommel horse and floor during Illinois’ home loss to Ohio State last Friday.

Quiana recorded a 14.950 score on the floor, the fifth-highest mark in the NCAA this season.

UI roundup: Home runs doom host Illini

CHAMPAIGN — On a fair March day with temperatures in the 60s, the wind was blowing out at Illinois Field on Sunday.

And baseballs were flying out of the park.

Michigan State launched eight home runs — five in the first two innings — as the Spartans pounded Illinois 17-6 to complete the weekend sweep. The Illini were outscored 41-11 in the three-game span.

UI Roundup: Wonderly no-hits the Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Illinois softball team opened Big Ten play Friday with a dominant all-around performance against Iowa.

Senior pitcher Breanna Wonderly fired a no-hitter and three Illini launched home runs as Illinois beat Iowa 8-0 in 5 innings at Pearl Field.

Underwood's hiring adds to recent UI positivity

CHAMPAIGN — The stigma is gone. Or, at least, fading fast.

In 2015, Illinois fired its football coach and its athletic director. There were pending lawsuits. The chancellor resigned.

It was not an easy time to be involved with the school's athletic program. Each month seemed to bring more negative news.

TAMPA, Fla. — Emily Brodner struck a three-run homer as part of a seven-run third inning Sunday, lifting Illinois softball to a 13-5 five-inning win over Bethune-Cookman in its Clearwater Spring Break Classic finale.

Martinez pinned, falls in NCAA title match

ST. LOUIS — Isaiah Martinez wrestled the 100th match of his career Saturday night at Scottrade Center, donning his orange singlet reserved solely for national championships against Penn State’s Vincenzo Joseph in the 165-pound title match.

CHAMPAIGN — Jack Yalowitz struck a three-run homer and drove in the first of four sixth-inning runs for Illinois baseball Friday, lifting the host team to an 11-5 win over Toledo.

The Illini (5-9) led 5-4 when Yalowitz notched an RBI double in the sixth inning, the first of three run-scoring hits in the frame for Illinois.
