Public schools help break down barriers

Watching Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos visit and applaud a Roman Catholic school while promoting school voucher programs is thought provoking.

Naturally, Roman Catholic schools teach religion. If school vouchers support the Roman Catholic ideology, it is only right that our taxes must also pay to teach other religious perspectives such as Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Mormon, yes, atheist and Wiccan, too. When we cease to separate church and state, someone in the government must choose which religions are worthy of funding. Who do you trust with that choice?

Public schools have offered me an opportunity to know, love and respect people from races, religions, cultures, abilities and social classes different from my own. Public school can break down barriers of prejudice and help us learn to deal with one another as individuals. Where else in our country are we afforded that valuable opportunity?
